Why shopping pre-loved is a money win

Jess made this, please go tell her she did a good job because she worked really hard on it

There are so many ways to save (and we tend to talk about them a lot at SOTM) - putting 24 hours between you and your purchases, unsubscribing from marketing emails and of course, shopping pre-loved . According to research completed by our friends at Gumtree, Savvy Aussies stand to make approximately $5,300 per household from their unwanted items, and that is a lot of extra cash that we know you could put to very good use.

Shopping pre-loved by using platforms like Gumtree is one of the easiest ways to score money wins, BUT there are soooo many reasons beyond just saving a buck that you should consider this way of shopping.

What are they? We are so glad you asked. Without further ado, here are the SOTM team’s top tips for why it pays to shop pre-loved.

1.  You can score more unique, less generic finds

When we shop first-hand it often means we buy things that everyone else already has - we’re thinking rattan chairs, jute rugs and Matisse prints (no judgement OF COURSE)  - by broadening your horizons and buying pre-loved the scope for buying things that are more unique really broadens.

2.  You save money

This one is a no-brainer - you can be sooo thrifty when you buy pre-loved and can score some absolute steals (and if you listen to our own Jessica Ricci, you can ~ manifest ~ just about anything). So make a list of the items you’re after - that new designer top or a fridge for your new place - and dedicate some time to hunting down a bargain instead of just shelling out extra cash for no reason! Also don’t forget that you can also make money by selling on old goods that you don’t have a need for anymore!

3.  It’s better for the planet

Shopping pre-loved is much more sustainable than buying brand new and it’s easy to forget how damaging fast fashion and consumerism is on the planet. Did you know that 6000 kg of clothes are thrown out every 10 minutes in Aus - which goes directly to landfill? Or that it takes 2700 litres of water to produce ONE item of clothing?! Not to mention the average Aussie has approximately 21 unused or unwanted items in their home! When we start thinking about the impacts of consumerism it makes pre-loved buying a much more appealing option.

4.  It’s incredibly satisfying

There’s almost no better feeling in the world than scoring a bargain, and scoring one pre-loved is even more satisfying. As our very own Jessica Ricci often says on the podcast, she believes in the power of manifesting on these pre-loved marketplaces, so get to work and see what you can manifest the next time you’re on Gumtree!

So don’t wait, join the more than 7 million Aussies currently using Gumtree and see what bargains you can pick up - they offer everything under the sun from cars and vehicles, parts and accessories, home and garden, sport and fitness, electronics and computers, clothing and jewellery, business services, real estate, jobs and more!

We promise your bank account (and the planet) will thank you for it!
